Arrival in New York
September 14, 1857
Johann with his wife, Charlotte, and their 3 children arrived at the Port of New York on September 14, 1857 after a 2-month trip from Hamburg, Germany. They may have come through Castle Garden at the time since it started to be used as the official Emigrant Landing Depot in about 1854. Though, after searching through Castle Garden’s records, I haven’t found any information on the family.
It lists his final destination as “United States” which doesn’t give any more information. I don’t know if they were already planning on going to Wisconsin or if they just sort of landed there with other immigrants.
